What this Presentation Covers The primary purpose of this presentation is to give information and guidance about the revised Dance (National 5) course structure and assessment, starting 2017/18. This presentation will cover: course assessment components changed and unchanged components new question paper course assessment course delivery

Course Assessment Components The revised Dance (National 5) course has three components Component Marks Component weighting Component 1: question paper 30 20% Component 2: practical activity 65 45% Component 3: performance 35 35%

An overview of what is changed and what is unchanged A new question paper for Dance (National 5) will be introduced in session 2017/2018. The practical activity is unchanged. The dance performance is unchanged. Visiting Assessment is unchanged. The choreography review must be pre-marked by the centre assessor prior to the Visiting Assessment event.

Component 1: question paper Section 1: Evaluation of Own Work & Personal Performance Section 2: Knowledge & Understanding of a chosen Dance Style Section 3: Evaluation of Professional Choreography Candidates will be asked to give an evaluative response of self, reflecting on their dance experience throughout the course and/or course assessment.   Candidates will be asked to demonstrate knowledge of their chosen dance style. This may include its origin, history, key steps, key characteristics and developments. Candidates will be required to evaluate the impact of choreographic principles on a professional piece of choreography. This may include theme/stimulus, structure, devices, spatial patterns and theatre arts.

Course Assessment Component 2: Practical activity (Section 1) – present a dance for two people, excluding self, lasting a minimum of 1 minute 30 seconds and a maximum of 2 minutes (35 marks). Practical activity (Section 2) – prepare a choreography review to demonstrate candidates knowledge and understanding of research and choreographic principles while making clear the relationship to the stimulus (30 marks). Component 3: Performance (Technical solo) – a performance demonstrating a variety of technical and performance skills required for the selected dance style (35 marks).

Course Delivery Centres may choose to adopt an integrated approach to help candidates gain knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of both dance technique and choreography.
