2 Revised Higher Course Assessment Higher Design and Manufacture

3 Aims To provide teachers, lecturers and assessors with an understanding of: the revised course assessment for Higher Design and Manufacture from session the requirements of the assignment

4 Lesley Clark Rachael Marriott Dick Knox Mark Leishman Kirsty McDermid Kirsty Jardine Jo Leonard Ross McCallum Stephanie Rye

5 Assessment Overview The course has two assessment components:
Component 1: question paper 80 marks Component 2: assignment 90 marks

6 What has changed: Question paper
now includes a question sampling content from previous Materials and Manufacture Unit Outcome 1 marks increased from 70 to 80 marks time to complete 2 hours and 15 minutes

7 What has changed: Assignment
assignment set annually externally marked by SQA issued to centres in November now includes coverage of Design Unit Outcome 1 and Materials and Manufacture Unit Outcome 2 presented on maximum of 12 A3-sized sheets or equivalent (including 4 pro formas) increased from 70 to 90 marks

8 Further information: Assignment
application of skills, knowledge and understanding Area Marks Carrying out research into a given brief 5 marks Producing a specification 3 marks Generating initial ideas 8 Marks Exploring ideas 12 Marks Refining ideas 6 Marks Applying knowledge and understanding of materials, manufacturing and assembly processes 10 Marks Applying knowledge and understanding of design Apply graphic techniques Demonstrating practical modelling skills Producing a plan for commercial manufacture Applying modelling techniques

9 Assignment: Assessment conditions
completed over an extended period of time produced under some supervision and control no restrictions on the resources candidates must undertake the assessment independently reasonable assistance may be provided

10 During the Assessment Task
You may: refer candidates to the brief and candidate guide You may not: provide feedback to the candidate on their work provide any assistance or tailored resources that would generate marks

11 Carry out Research (5 marks)
What is being looked for: A range of research methods such as: questionnaires, interviews, measuring, user trips, accessing secondary research Valid information on a range of issues such as: theme, sizes, aesthetics, environment, function, cost, production volume, relevant ergonomic data Effective and appropriate use

12 Carry out Research Marks are not awarded for:
personal opinion e.g. on existing solutions mind maps ranges of data or collection of images where the findings are unclear generic gathering of information

13 Produce a Specification (3 marks)
What is being looked for: key information from the brief is included in the specification (1 mark) additional points are drawn from research points are detailed to aid the development of the proposal.

14 Produce a Specification
Marks are not awarded for: personal opinion generic statements points that are incorrectly drawn from research points that omit the specific detail gathered in research

15 Generate initial ideas (8 marks)
What is being looked for: creativity and diversity skill in generating a wide range of ideas ideas address the key function of the brief appropriate detail Using appropriate idea generation techniques will help candidates access marks in this section.

16 Generate initial ideas
Marks are not awarded for: shapes and forms with no clear function existing solutions ideas that do not address the brief

17 Explore ideas (12 marks) What is being looked for:
Exploration of a range of issues such as function, aesthetics, ease of use, cost, manufacture, assembly. consideration of the standard component and theme clear alternatives for different aspects meaningful exploration that advances the proposal Use of the specification to identify areas to explore will help candidates access marks in this section.

18 Explore ideas Marks are not awarded for:
superficial exploration such as shape change and rounding corners repetition of exploration if developing 2 ideas

19 Refine ideas (6 marks) What is being looked for: decisions are clear
decisions are based on facts (research, exploration, testing and/or modelling) effective detail of component parts and assembly Decisions on a range of issues from the specification such as the functional requirements, incorporation of theme, standard component, ease of use, cost etc.

20 Refine ideas Marks are not awarded for:
sizes and decisions that have no explanation

21 K&U Materials, manufacturing and assembly processes (10 marks)
What is being looked for: consideration throughout exploration and refinement knowledge from the Higher course appropriate selection and justification of materials appropriate selection and justification of processes incorporating the standard component design detail of component parts detail of the assembly of parts

22 K&U Materials, manufacturing and assembly processes
Marks are not awarded for: labelling of materials and processes generic information about processes or materials diagrams or descriptions explaining how moulding machines work incorrect materials or processes

23 K&U Design (10 marks) What is being looked for:
consideration throughout exploration knowledge from the higher course knowledge to resolve issues in the specification such as function, performance, theme, ease of use, cost etc. knowledge informs decision making

24 K&U Design Marks are not awarded for:
generic information about design issues repetition of knowledge

25 Apply graphic techniques (12 marks)
What is being looked for: appropriate graphics for the stage in the folio communication of form and function part detail such as sizes and thickness detail of assembly such as hidden detail or exploded views communication of scale of idea graphics are easy to understand use of known graphic styles

26 Apply graphic techniques
Marks are not awarded for: graphics not appropriate for higher level graphics that don’t communicate graphics that are not any recognised method repetition of the same sketch/ graphic

27 CAD CAD will be awarded marks for modelling or graphics- depending on how it has been presented and how it will benefit the candidate.

28 Apply modelling techniques (8 marks)
What is being looked for: Modelling used for a range of purposes such as: generating ideas communicating ideas not already evident in graphics testing or evaluating working out scale and proportion appropriate modelling such as sketch, block, part, scale and/or CAD models Clear record of what has been gained from any models used or test or evaluate.

29 Apply modelling techniques
Marks are not awarded for: models with no clear purpose models that don’t communicate anything new models where the use has not been recorded models on the proforma page that are not in the body of the design work.

30 Demonstrate practical modelling skills (8 marks)
What is being looked for: physical models/ part models accuracy in measuring, shaping, forming and/or assembly evidence of scale detail in the parts or assembly Ideally the models will have been generated to aid the exploration and refinement of the proposal.

31 Demonstrate practical modelling skills
Marks are not awarded for: Computer generated models such as laser cut, 3D printed or CAD models. rough sketch models models where the detail or accuracy is not communicated clearly in the photograph

32 Produce a plan for commercial manufacture (6 marks)
What is being looked for: plausible and detailed parts table detail of the component parts such as key sizes, assembly details, manufacturing features

33 Produce a plan for commercial manufacture
Marks are not awarded for: graphics that don’t provide detail to aid manufacture incorrect processes or materials
