Objectives Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences
Bell Work One thing that I learned as a child that I will never forget is…. Where do babies come from?
Labor and Delivery Flip Book Read the chapter in the text on Labor and Delivery and create the flip Book.
The stages of labor First stage Second stage Third Stage Contractions cause cervix to dilate Second stage The baby is born Third Stage The placenta is expelled
First Stage of labor Early labor Phase where contractions are mild Last 30 to 40 seconds and occur every 20 to 30 minutes Last usually about 8-12 hours Can engage in light activity such as walking around or taking a shower
First Stage Active Labor Once the cervix has dilated to about 3 centimeters Usually 3 to 5 hours Contractions become stronger and more frequent Women are advised to go to the hospital or birthing center when contractions are five minutes apart or less
Checking in to the hospital Hospital gown Identification band Medical history Sign forms Urine sample Pelvic examination Check dilation and position of the fetus
First stage Pulse and blood pressure checked regularly Fetal monitor Keep track of babies heart rate and stress
First Stage Transition Last 30 minutes to two hours Contractions last about 60 to 90 seconds and occur about every 30 seconds Dilates from 7 to 10 cm wide
Reducing discomforts of labor Having support of loved ones Being well rested Light snacks during early labor Knowing what to expect Using techniques taught in prepared childbirth classes
Medications available Systemic drug Helps relieve pain tension or nausea Injected into a muscle or vein Local anesthetic Causes loss of sensation Given by injections and numbs a small area
Medications Regional anesthetic General anesthetic Epidural Numbs a large area Injected in the space that surrounds the spinal cord in the lower back Numbs the uterus and birth canal without stopping labor General anesthetic Produces unconsciousness
Second stage Delivery of the baby begins Start to push Usually 20 minutes to 2 hours Contractions 45-90 seconds every 3 to 5 minutes May move to a separate delivery room Alternate positions Kneeling, squatting, or lying on one side
Second stage Head first and facing the mother’s back
Second stage As the head begins to emerge the baby turns face upward
Second stage Baby’s skull is made of flexibly joined plates of bone allowing it to be temporarily molded into an egg shape
Second Stage Episiotomy A surgical cut to ease the passage of the baby’s head through the vaginal opening Stitched up after birth When the head emerges the attendant suctions mucus from the baby’s nose and mouth The head of the baby widens the passage for the rest of the body Shoulders emerge one at a time
Second stage Doctors can use a suction device or forceps to help with delivery The umbilical cord is cut Neither the baby or mother feels this
Third stage of labor The placenta is delivered Mild contractions separate the placenta from the uterine wall 10-30 minutes a menstrual-like flow begins Last for several days to 6 weeks
Variations in the birth process Breech presentation The baby is feet or buttocks first Sometimes can be delivered normally may need to have a surgical delivery
Variations in the birth process Cesarean delivery Deliver the baby through a surgical opening in the mother’s abdomen May be necessary when Mother’s pelvis is too small Breech Multiples Preexisting medical condition Placenta covers the opening of the uterus Long labor Heart rate drop
