1st Grade Reading Expectations First grade is pivotal in your child’s academic success. This is when he/she needs to learn how to read. By the end of the year, your child must be able to read 50-70 words per minute. In order to do so, each child must read a minimum of 20 minutes per day. If he/she struggles to read, it is okay for you, or a sibling, to read to him/her. As the year progresses, he/she should begin reading independently. Reading Level Expectations: Sep.
