Growing into Statehood On May 11, 1835, the constitution was written in Detroit by 91 men. The people of Michigan approved the constitution in October, BUT Congress refused to let Michigan a state. Why do you think they refused?

Growing to Statehood The problem was a small piece of land known as the Toledo Strip. Ohio and Michigan both sent soldiers to fight for the “Toledo Strip.” It was no more than a shouting match, but they could not agree! What do you think could help them come to an agreement?

The Toledo Strip Congress had to step in and come up with a compromise. Congress asked Michigan to give up the Toledo Strip. In return, Congress gave Michigan a part in the Upper Peninsula. Michigan liked the compromise, but became a state on January 26, 1837.

The Copper Rush In 1841, copper was discovered in the Upper Peninsula. People rushed to the Upper Peninsula to get rich from mining. Until the 1920s, Michigan was the world’s best copper deposits.

Iron Another natural resource was discovered in the late 1840s. Today only Minnesota has more iron. Houghton and Hancock were mining camps in Michigan, and they became cities. How did these natural resources effect people coming to Michigan?
