ES Role in ARCP Reliant on ES reports Quality variable! Could I “see” this trainee? Had the ES developed the trainee

What does a good report look like?

What resources do we give eS’s ES induction afternoon ES pack ES faculty away afternoon annually Topics - communication and NLP, asking great questions, reflection Educational staff member supports mid year and end of year meetings Educational staff support - portfolio etc

What did we do? Discussed feedback at ES away day in May followed by email - no dissenters Invited all ES’s to be part of ARCP panels At each ARCP 3 members - 1 driving portfolio, 1 check listing and 1 completing ES evaluation Lots of discussion for all parts

ES report feedback tool

Form overview Structured judgement referenced to evidence Suggestions for development Highlight areas of good practice Global judgement

What did the ES’s think? Grateful for feedback Changed practice Critically appraised own reports Used to develop use of portfolio

What did the ES’s do? Improved depth of evidence in reports Referenced discussions to curriculum and personal development Recognised trainees at each end of the spectrum Challenged themselves to support individuals and explore options

HOw can an ES use the feedback? Improve practice Structure reports Evidence in educational appraisal
