What is a mission Statement and how should it be constructed? 25 words or less describing organizational purpose constituents served how/methods Highlight or underline these components in each of the mission statements (Institutional, Divisional, and departmental).

Goals Broad general statements of what you want to accomplish • It is not a “to do” list. • They are aspirational in nature and aligned with the mission statement • A “road map” to how the mission statement will be achieved by the organization • Provide focus

Learning Outcomes The measurable expected results of an instructional program or service, which contribute to the achievement of department goals. Learning Outcomes: Specific statement about what knowledge, skill, or behavior a participant will acquire as a result of participating in a program or service Service Outcomes: Focus on the quality and quantity of programs and/or service. Such outcomes typically use satisfaction surveys or user counts as metrics.

Membership Students will be able to identify (1) membership in an HCC community (club, team, group) or a leadership role they hold at Highline Community College as a result of their participation in the Center for Leadership and Service offerings.

Evaluating Learning Outcomes • Clarity Outcomes are specific and detailed action statements. Outcomes are congruent with the organization’s mission and goals. • Measurable Outcomes are able to provide evidence of educational benefits. Outcomes are observable. • Useful/Meaningful Outcomes are able to guide the decision making process. Outcomes are learning centered.

Service/Program Outcome ASK: • What information is necessary for you to plan your budget? • What information assist you in evaluating staff, services, and programs? EXAMPLES: • Normal types of service / program outcomes: Number of clients served Quality of services provided Customer satisfaction Needs assessment

Learning Outcomes & Service Outcomes dictate the programs and/or services offered Because your goals, learning/service outcomes, and programs are designed based on institutional, divisional, and departmental missions  they are mission aligned. Activity Based upon the stated learning outcome and service outcome for your department, what programs/services could be offered to accomplish this? How would you know if it worked?
