SHRM College/University Exam Program Beginning with the Winter 2017, Colleges and universities whose degree programs in HR have been approved by SHRM’s Academic Initiatives department may participate in a special program for their students. This program allows students enrolled in their final year of an HR degree program to apply for and take the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) exam. The MHR curriculum qualifies.

Student Eligibility Requirements Must be enrolled in the final year of study in an HR undergraduate or graduate degree program that aligns with SHRM’s curriculum guidelines. Must be a student in good standing (as defined by the university). Must have a minimum of 500 hours of relevant HR experience.

Relevant HR Experience Internships in HR HR work-study assignments Directed HR work-related projects Directed HR research-related projects [e.g., Senior Project] Supervised independent study in HR Part-time or full-time work in HR

Internships in HR Internship or work must be specifically in HR, or performing HR duties if the internship or job title is not ‘HR’. For documentation purposes to support your certification application, keep track of the total number of hours worked each week. While it is not necessary to have an HR-specific job title, your work must be HR-specific work.

Work-study Assignments in HR Work-study assignments generally run concurrently with enrollment in courses, and are usually part-time in nature. It is imperative you track the type of HR-specific work you undertake, regardless of what job title accompanies your work-study assignment. While it is not necessary to have an HR-specific job title, your work assignments must be HR-specific work.

Directed-research Project Research projects that contribute to the body of research behind the practice of HR, support the empirical research efforts of HR faculty member(s) or a university-wide research agenda in HR and are supervised by an HR faculty member are considered HR-relevant work experience for the purposes of this exclusive student SHRM-CP eligibility requirement. Similarly, if you and a faculty member work in tandem with a local HR professional to conduct research in HR to address a need at an organization, that HR-specific research is also considered HR-relevant work experience for the purposes of this exclusive student SHRM-CP eligibility requirement. Be sure to specifically document your involvement at each stage of research development, analysis and reporting, and make the link to HR obvious by stating it clearly in your documentation.

Independent Study Assignments in HR Independent study assignments may be formal or informal. A formal independent study assignment is one that you design with the help of a faculty member or guiding committee, and for which you pay tuition to earn credits. The contact hours required to earn the credits do not count toward the 500 hour experience eligibility requirement. However, any additional work engagement to complete assignments due to earn the credits do count. A few examples: you meet with a local HR professional to gather information to inform an independent study project, OR you complete a special project for a local HR professional and invest 20 hours outside of ‘class time’ working on the project.

Part-time or Full-time Work in HR If you hold a full-time or part-time job in HR, be certain to track all the hours you work during your university career. Remember; you can accumulate the 500 hours of relevant HR work experience across your entire time at university, not all in one calendar year. Your job title does not need to be an HR job title, but your work must clearly be HR-specific work. Document this work the same way you would communicate job responsibilities on a résumé.

Directed-work Project Work projects that support the mission of a local HR department, are accomplished outside of in-class time, are supervised by an HR faculty member or an HR professional in the local community or by both jointly, and have specific, targeted outcomes related to accomplishing HR goals of the organization are considered HR-relevant work experience for the purposes this exclusive student SHRM-CP eligibility requirement. For example, if the project you are working on for a specific HR department in an organization is focused on designing a program, or analyzing a problem then recommending alternative courses of action and preferred or recommended solution for the company to implement, completely document the work you accomplished to achieve the outcome.
