Presentation transcript:

Expository writing is the process of uncovering or exposing a topic It simply explains a topic thoroughly.

The BLOCK, a list of related topics, but undeveloped facts in a paragraph form. It has no focus because it lists several reasons. It does not contain details.

A specific topic that give specific reasons The format for a body paragraph is the three layer-cake model 1. Top layer – Statement or reason This layer is then and it answers the key question: WHY? 2. Middle layer – Examples/Descriptions This layer is the thickest of the three because it will contain details supporting the reason

Bottom layer – This layer is thin, like the top layer. It can be accomplished in one or two sentences. Key question: What difference does it make?

One chore I really hate to do is taking out the garbage. One reason I hate it is it stinks. It is really nasty. Also, the bag is heavy and breaks sometimes. Then the garbage juice leaks on me. I also hate this job because the dogs get in the trash and spread garbage all around our yard. I have to go out and pick it all up. Yuck! These are the reasons I hate taking out the trash. Nobody should have to do this!

This body paragraph does not concentrate on one specific reason. It lists three different reasons: The garbage stinks The bag breaks The dogs spread garbage over the yard

The writer should concentrate on one reason per body paragraph and give specific details for that reason by using the three layer cake model. Also the writer does not include very much description. He or she should give specific details as to how or why the garbage stinks. The writer uses the boring One reason I hate.. way to introduce the topic.

I hate taking out the garbage because it smells to high heaven. For example, the kitchen trash is really nasty. The plastic bag always bulges full of things like last weeks meatloaf surprise, old tuna fish cans, moldy cheese, and gobs of mushy turnip greens. This whole mess floats in a pool of spoiled milk. The odor could drop a charging rhinoceros a hundred yards away. That smell almost always soaks Into my clothes, and when I get to school, nobody will be my friend.

Think of a chore you really hate to do and explain why. Be sure to give good reasons and examples to illustrate your choice. Do not use taking out the trash.
