History of Cells Chapter 7 Sect. 1

History of Cells Recall: 7 Characteristics of Life Examine the tip of your finger….What do you see? This was all made possible by a Dramatic Advance in Technology Invention of the Microscope

Robert Hooke Created the first microscope in the mid-1600’s (1665) Created an early compound microscope (30x magnification) Examined a thin piece of cork, a plant material Observed 2 things: Many small boxes Hollow, empty chambers

Hooke’s Experiment

Anton von Leeuwenhoek Created his own microscope in 1674 Used a single lens microscope (200x) to observe water Revealed a world of tiny living organisms Why was his microscope so good? It was simple!

Leeuwenhoek’s Experiment

Cell Theory 150 years of experiments passed until a board of scientists accepted that cells were the basic units of life Three scientists provided final experiments that delivered us the Cell Theory!

Cell Theory 1838: Matthias Schleiden concluded that all plants were made up of cells 1839: Theodor Schwann concluded that all animals were made up of cells 1855: Rudolf Virchow concluded that new cells could be produced only by the division of existing cells

Cell Theory These discoveries summarized the cell theory: All living things are composed of cells. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things New cells are produced from existing cells
