Space and Missile Defense Working Group (SMDWG) Charter Background The SMDWG is formed to respond to our civic responsibility to assist in the decision making process on issues pertaining to space and ballistic missile defense. Scope The Scope of the SMDWG is to Educate the general population and elected representation on space and ballistic missile defense. Membership Membership is open to all individuals in government, industry, and the community. SMDWG members must belong to the NDIA or an affiliate.

Dr. Brent Ziarnick Director, Schriever Scholars Air Command and Staff College United States Air Force

Dr. Brent Ziarnick Dr. Brent D. Ziarnick is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Military Studies and director of the Schriever Scholars Program, the world’s first year-long, space-centric professional military education program dedicated to educating space strategists at the Air University’s Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. Dr. Ziarnick is a command space operations officer in the Air Force Reserve with extensive experience in Global Positioning System (GPS) engineering, offensive space control, and theater space command and control.

Dr. Brent Ziarnick In civilian life he was a launch operations engineer at Spaceport America, New Mexico where he developed the long-range plan for the world’s first purpose-built inland commercial spaceport’s vertical launch activity. He holds a doctorate in economic development from New Mexico State University, a master’s degree in space systems engineering from the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, a bachelor’s degree in space operations from the United States Air Force Academy, and is a graduate of both the Air Command and Staff College and the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies. Dr. Ziarnick is the author of two books and multiple articles on space power theory and strategy.
