Which Leaders Inspires You!

Leadership Characteristics What qualities does a good leader have? Why are they important?

Leadership Style Questionnaire Complete the Leadership Style Quiz to find out your personal leadership style!

Leadership Style Questionnaire 4,6,12,14 Authoritative 1,8,11,13 Democratic 2,7,9,16 Facilitative 3,5,10,15 Situational

Authoritative Leaders Personal Responsibility for decisions. Tell or sell decisions to others. Strengths Weaknesses Group members know where they stand. Unlikely to get buy in from all the group. Rapid decisions can be made. May result in uninformed decisions. Can focus on operational without worrying about the strategic. Doesn’t allow the opportunity for others to develop.

Democratic Leaders All group members involved in the decision. Establishes structure and ground rules to enable all to participate. Strengths Weaknesses Power to the members. May slow down tasks. Energises and motivates the group. Direction may lack clarity. Builds individual responsibility. Difficult when quick decisions are required. Most popular decisions are not always the best.

Facilitative Leaders Concerned with offering suggestions and letting the group determine the structure, content and operations. Group activity a learning process and its ok to make mistakes. Strengths Weaknesses Encourages creativity and explores ideas. Can lead to chaos and lack of clarity. Enables individual learning. The Leadership ‘gap’ can be filled by others informally. Can be empowering to group members.

Situational Leaders Adapt leadership style depending on the needs of each individual situation. Takes into account the skills of team members, level of confidence and the task required. Strengths Weaknesses Allows for group changes over time. Difficult to deliver effectively. Adaptable depending on the situation. May lead to team uncertainty and resistance.

Effective Chairing Each team will be appointed a leader who will chair a meeting with their team. Each team member will receive a card with an instruction for the meeting and should follow these instructions throughout the course of the meeting. Each team leader will also receive an instruction for the meeting which they should follow throughout the course of the meeting. Please be prepared to discuss how the meeting went following the activity!

Tips for Effective Chairing Always have an agenda and circulate beforehand Make clear action points Listen to the team Encourage all the team to contribute Allow one speaker at a time Ask constructive questions Focus on solutions rather than problems Always write meeting minutes

Questioning Skills In small groups you will pick a famous person at random from a set of cards and the others will have to ask questions to work out who it is. The person with the card can only answer with yes/no!
