Nature of Science and Scientific Method Unit 1 Lesson 3

Nature of Science and Scientific Method Students will be able to: Define science, nature of science and scientific method. Know about the steps in scientific method. Know about the different branches of science. Key Vocabulary: Science, nature of science, scientific method, hypothesis, experiment, evaluation and interpretation.

Nature of Science and Scientific Method Is it easy to define science? What can be your definition of science? The definition of science varies from one individual to another. It also varies with the type of study.

Nature of Science and Scientific Method What is Science? It is a way of studying the natural world and the natural phenomena using scientific methods. The overall goal of science is to give an explanation and a solution to a problem. The word science is derived from a Latin word “scientia” or “sciens” which means “to know”.

It includes: Scientific knowledge is tentative. Scientific knowledge is based on empirical evidences. Scientific knowledge is durable. Scientific knowledge is based on the curiosity of the scientist. Scientific knowledge is based on logic and imagination.

Nature of Science and Scientific Method It is an efficient technique and an organized process to test ideas in a systematic way. It is an experimental step by step process for an investigation to carry out and to derive a conclusion.
