Layers of the Earth What Lies Beneath?
Earths Layers The Earth is made up of 4 layers, each range in depth, temperature and composition. The Four layers are:
The Crust Rocky Earth Surface is called the Lithosphere Made up of the Continental (land) and Oceanic Crusts This is where you find your landforms, like Mountains and Volcanoes Ranges from 3 to 50 miles thick When these plates shift, we have earthquakes!
The Mantle A rock hard, solid pieces, that actually move- just VERY slowly. The Thickest of all the layers of the earth Produces heat that helps warm the earth’s oceans
Outer Core Made out of Iron and Nickel, but since it is so hot, the Outer core is completely liquefied. Constant motion since the liquids are always flowing
Inner Core Inner core is found 6,000 miles below the earths surface. Solid ball of Nickel and other Metals Core spins (faster than the rest of earth), in a counter clockwise rotation due to its magnetic pull (like a ball spinning) Inner Core Spins
Plate Tectonics The Earths Crust is divided into separate plates, and as they move different landforms are created. These Plates are in constant motion, and will continue to change the earths surface. The Pacific Plate is home to the most Volcanoes, known as the Ring of Fire
