Journey to the Center of Earth

Layers of the Earth Outer Crust Inner Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner Core Crust

Inner Core 750 mile radius Outer Core 1,430 miles Mantle 1,800 miles Crust (10-25 miles) Inside Our Earth

The inner core is made of solid nickel and iron. The outer core is made of hot liquid nickel and iron. The crust is made of soil, water and rock. The mantle is hot part melted and part solid iron and magnesium. Composition of the Earth’s Layers

Outer Crust This is the layer that we live on The thickness ranges from five miles under the oceans to 25 miles under the continents Consists of cooled rock It is the thinnest layer of the earth

The Mantle This layer is semi- liquid It consists of magnesium, iron, and silicon It is 3000 km wide It is more solid closer to the surface

The Outer Core This is consists of liquid due to the high temperatures It is 2100 km wide This layer consists of nickel and iron

The Inner Core This layer is solid. The reason it is solid is due to the high pressure exerted on it from the outside layers. It consists of the metals nickel and iron. Its temperature is 6,000 degree Celsius. Its width is 2,100 km.

Earth’s ________ is divided into sections. crust

How many sections is Earth’s crust divided into?

These sections are known as …

The place where plates meet is called a …

Most volcanoes and earthquakes are located at the …

Let’s Play

Mountains

Plates move apart

Volcanoes

Changes the shape of the ocean floor

Trenches

Plates collide

Two plates slide past one another

One plate slides under another

When two plates converge ________ may work its way through the crust. magma

Magma may contain highly explosive ________. gases

A ____________ is formed when magma breaks through to the surface. volcano

New _______ is formed when the lava cools and hardens. land

An _______________ occurs when plates move and the crust slips or breaks. earthquake
