The 12 Tables and the Roman Republic

Twelve Tables Created so both rich and poor Roman citizens would be equal under the law and The laws were about, court procedure, debt, property, marriage, funeral, and crimes Great impact on future ideas of law and equality under it

Roman Republic 509 B.C. – 44 B.C. Constitution- separation of powers (very influential in today’s world)

The Legislative Powers The Senate- Made up of elected Patricians- upper class Plebeian Council- Made up of non-Patricians (middle class) Both passed legislation

Executive Power Councils- highest ranking person in government - supreme power in civil and military matters (sort of like a president or prime minister) - Served short terms Praetors- administer civil law and command some of the provinces

Why did the Republic Fall and turn into a Empire? Corrupt officials- people lost faith in the system Difficult to run all of the conquer territory effectively- need quick decisions Powerful military culture
