PCS – BYOD Are you ready for devices in your classroom? August 2013

Todays students are: They are digital natives They live in a multimedia world Their media is all color They prioritize visual learning They demand creativity They learn best through trial and error They constantly connect and collaborate They access information that is live and linked

What is BYOD? BYOD is an acronym for Bring Your Own Device. A device is defined as a privately owned laptop, tablet computing device, netbook, notebook, e-Reader, iPod Touch, iPad, or smartphone. For this program, device also includes any similar product owned by Pendleton County Schools and provided for student use.

Why BYOD? Our students are digital natives and live in a world where information creation and consumption is constantly occurring. We feel that access to the tools and resources of a world-wide network and understanding when and how these tools are appropriately and effectively used are imperative in each students education. We envision a learning environment where technology is a part of us, not apart from us.

When will it begin? The district has the generic BYOD form that gives parent permission for the device to come to school. If you want to implement a policy more specific it will need to be reviewed by your site base and approved. All students must successfully pass their digital citizenship training in order to utilize their device at school (LMS). Stickers will be placed on student ID to show they have completed and pass this training successfully!

What is the expectation for use of mobile devices in the classroom? You as the teacher determine when use of mobile devices is appropriate and allowed within your classroom. Students are responsible for their own mobile devices. Teachers are expected to read and abide by the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Teachers may also use their own devices during the school day.

How will I control which apps are on a student owned device? The simple answer is that you will not. It is likely that your students will bring a variety of devices to school. Some examples are iOS (Apple) devices, Android devices and Windows 8. All devices students are using should be capable of accessing the internet resources via the PCS - BYOD network. (PCS NET)

How will I control which apps are on a student owned device? Any app download and/or purchase for student owned devices is the responsibility of the student/parent. While it is acceptable to mention specific curricular apps to students, you can not require students to download them on their personal devices. Many free apps contain inappropriate advertising and/or content. These apps must be thoroughly reviewed prior to use with students.

Which mobile devices are allowed? Internet enabled devices that can connect to the districts wireless network These devices may include, but are not limited to: – iPod Touch – iPad – other tablet computing devices – smartphones – laptops – netbook – e-Readers

How will my students access the internet? Students will access the internet through the PCS BYOD wireless network on a registered device. (PCS NET) This network will provide filtered internet access as well as access to some other District systems and resources. Any and all access may be monitored for the purposes of network security and student safety.

What are the responsibilities of students? Read, agree and adhere to the PCS Acceptable Use Policy. (AUP) Access the internet through the PCS BYOD network only. (Access of the internet through data plans such as 3G/4G networks is prohibited.) – PCS is not responsible for any data or app charges that a student may incur from a service provider.

What are the responsibilities of students? Use of the PCS BYOD network is for instructional and school related purposes only. Students may not use any device or service for non-educational purposes during school hours, unless granted permission by a school administrator or teacher. Devices may only be used in certain approved areas of the school. Students may not use devices in parts of the school designated as no technology zones or any other areas where devices are not permitted.

What are the responsibilities of students? The student is responsible for the condition of the their device used for BYOD including updates, antivirus software and any repairs. Personal devices should be brought to school fully charged and should be capable of lasting a full school day without recharging. The student is fully responsible, at all times, for personal devices brought to school. PCS is not liable for any loss, damage, or theft of personally owned devices.

What are some of the other guidelines in place for students? For classes where the teacher has opted to use a social media site for communication and/or assignments, the recommended social media site for the PCS BYOD program is Edmodo. No device, personal or otherwise, may be used to record, store, or transmit any type of image, sound or video from PCS, except for approved projects and with the permission of the teacher.

What are some of the other guidelines in place for students? If reasonable belief exists that the student has violated the terms of the Acceptable Use Policy, or other district policy, the student's device may be inspected and/or confiscated. Subsequent or additional disciplinary action involving misuse of technology may extend to loss of technology privileges or further action as determined by PCS

What are a parents responsibilities? Carefully read and review the Acceptable Use Policy - BYOD paperwork that will be sent home with their child and indicate their agreement. Be sure their childs device is in proper working order and is fully charged daily. Monitor their childs usage of their mobile devices.

How will my students register their devices? Devices may only be registered after the students and the parent/guardian have agreed to the Acceptable Use Policy. BYOD papers are returned to your lab manager and she reports those to Mr. Klaber at the BO. The first time a student connects to the internet using their device on the PCS BYOD network they will need to enter their login information.

What if a child doesnt have a device to bring to school? Not every child will have their own device. The District will provide access to the internet via classroom computers and a limited number of mobile devices. Students may collaborate with another student as appropriate
