What is the purpose of window treatments? Privacy Filter light Decoration/aesthetics

Window treatments are divided into 2 categories Hard: Shutters, blinds, and cornices Soft: Curtains, draperies, shades, and valances If this is a shutter and this is a valance then what do you think determines hard or soft window treatments

Hard Window Treatments 1. Shutters Shutters can cover all or part of a window. They are usually made of wood and are hinged for opening.

2. Blinds spaced slats that may be opened or closed by cords. Blinds are great for French doors because they provide privacy while still allowing the doors to work.

3. Cornice Cornice is a type of top treatment that is made of wood or an ornamental molding around the wall of a room just below the ceiling. Top treatments are only decorative and help to hide window hardware.

Soft Window Treatments 1. Curtains VS. 2. Draperies Panels of unlined lightweight fabric Can be window length or floor length Usually hung by a casing/rod pocket Café style curtains cover only the lower part of window Some are sheer and just to diffuse light Long panels of heavier pleated fabric Can be opened from center or side Usually lined to protect the decorative fabric and provide insulation, light control, and privacy

Although many people think curtains and drapes are the same thing, since they both cover windows, there is a difference by definition and use, even though most of us (me included) use the words interchangeably. Curtains usually are a lighter fabric, thin or sheer. They are not lined and won't block out light.

Café curtains

3. Shades Types of shades include: Roman, pleated, balloon, accordion, roller, and others Function is to block out sunlight Can be insulated to block out heat or cold

4. Valances Shorter pieces of fabric that cover the top part of window Often used with other window treatments Can be used to hide window treatment hardware
