EU-FP7 LOD2 Project Overview Page 2http://lod2.eu Creating Knowledge out of Interlinked Data Where are we? LOD Introduction What are the challenges for all this data? Linked Data Life Cycle Relevance in SEMIC context WP5 : Linked Data Visualization, Browsing and Authoring WP9: Use Case Open Government Data How can LOD2 help tomorrow? Publink Agenda

EU-FP7 LOD2 Project Overview Page 3http://lod2.eu Creating Knowledge out of Interlinked Data Achievements 1.Extension of the Web with a data commons (currently amounting 25 Billion facts) 2.vibrant, global RTD community 3.Industrial uptake begins (e.g. BBC, Thomson Reuters, Eli Lilly) 4.Emerging governmental adoption in sight 5.Establishing Linked Data as a deployment path for the Semantic Web. The emerging Web of Data achievements and challenges Challenges 1.Coherence: Relatively few, expensively maintained links 2.Quality: partly low quality data and inconsistencies 3.Performance: Still substantial penalties compared to relational 4.Data consumption: large- scale processing, schema mapping and data fusion still in its infancy 5.Usability: Missing direct end- user tools and network effect These issues are closely related and should ultimately lead to an ecosystem of interlinked knowledge! Web - a global, distributed platform for data, information and knowledge integration exposing, sharing, and connecting pieces of data, information, and knowledge on the Semantic Web using URIs and RDF July 2007 April 2008 September 2008 July 2009

EU-FP7 LOD2 Project Overview Page 4http://lod2.eu Creating Knowledge out of Interlinked Data Web server Problem: Try to search for these things on the current Web: Apartments near German-Russian bilingual childcare in Leipzig. ERP service providers with offices in Vienna and London. Researchers working on multimedia topics in Eastern Europe. Information is available on the Web, but opaque to current Web search. Why Linked Open Data? berlin.de Has everything about childcare in Berlin. Immobilienscout.de Knows all about real estate offers in Germany DB Web server DB Web server Search engine HTML RDF Solution: complement text on Web pages with structured linked open data & intelligently combine/integrate such structured information from different sources:

Inter-linking/ Fusing Classification/ Enrichment Quality AnalysisEvolution / Repair Search/ Browsing/ Exploration Extraction Storage/ Querying Manual revision/ authoring Linked Data Lifecycle Challenges

EU-FP7 LOD2 Project Overview Page 6http://lod2.eu Creating Knowledge out of Interlinked Data Adaptive Semantic Authoring semantic widget interface: allows the creation of small reusable interface components for domain- specific user interfaces (also for mobiles). adaptive widget choreography: enables the automatic generation of user interfaces. social networking interfaces: enable users to subscribe to arbitrary information adhering to certain semantically defined filter criteria. WP5: Linked Data Visualization, Browsing and Authoring

EU-FP7 LOD2 Project Overview Page 7http://lod2.eu Creating Knowledge out of Interlinked Data Semantic pipes: An engine and graphical environment for general Web Data transformations and Mashup. Sig.ma: A service and an end-user application to access the Web of Data as an integrated information space. WP 5: Technologies & Methods (1)

EU-FP7 LOD2 Project Overview Page 8http://lod2.eu Creating Knowledge out of Interlinked Data Site Services: Site Search and Site Widgets Widgets (right) provide relevant information, from Sindice, about the topic of the site. Site search (below) provides a rich faceted-browsing functionality of the sites widgets. WP 5: Technologies & Methods (2)

EU-FP7 LOD2 Project Overview Page 9http://lod2.eu Creating Knowledge out of Interlinked Data Use Cases Objective of WP8: Applying Linked Data technologies in an enterprise stack to support Human Resources-related issues. ENTERPRISE APPLICATIONS (Exalead) MEDIA & PUBLISHING (Wolters Kluwer Germany) OPEN GOVERNMENT DATA (Open Knowledge Foundation) Objective of WP9: Improving accessibility, findability and reusability of Open Government Data. Objective of WP7: Supporting content-related production workflows in the media & publishing industry.

EU-FP7 LOD2 Project Overview Page 10http://lod2.eu Creating Knowledge out of Interlinked Data WP9: What will it involve? Enabling exchange of metadata between different data catalogues Aggregating datasets from existing data catalogues Creating a European community of reusers to improve metadata Creating mechanisms for capturing derived / related datasets Bridge language and topical gaps to associate related information from all Member States

EU-FP7 LOD2 Project Overview Page 11http://lod2.eu Creating Knowledge out of Interlinked Data WP9: Who is this for? Data literate citizenry Data journalists Policy experts Decision makers Mobile and web developers Academics / researchers Public bodies Companies Civic society / NGOs And so on...
