2 Take-away Home Message Different Users → Different Requirements „One size does not fit all” – is that right? JeromeDL – digital library on social semantic information sources - combines the past and the future - now!

3 Presentation Outline Motivation: different users, different requirements What is a Semantic Digital Library JeromeDL: –Goals –Ontologies –Delivering and utilizing semantic information JeromeDL – short demo Conclusions and future work

4 Different User Roles – Different Requirements Researcher Researcher (publisher) (publisher) Goals: to publish research results with least effort required to find research results on related topics Interested in: easy publishing citation index

5 Different User Roles – Different Requirements Average User Average User (consumer) (consumer) Goals: to easily find and access knowledge to share the knowledge with peers Interested in: efficient search and browsing techniques applications of online communities

6 Different User Roles – Different Requirements Librarian Librarian (dispatcher) (dispatcher) Goals: to preserve knowledge in form of library resources to maintain library resources against all odds Interested in: precise, formal annotations of resources knowledge organization systems

7 Different User Roles – Different Requirements Cross referrencing Ease of use Semantic Web Web 2.0 Digital Libraries Legacy KOS Social Semantic Digital Libraries

8 JeromeDL – Social Semantic Digital Library Digital Library build with semantics and communities in mind Build to reflect requirements of: –Librarians –Researchers –Average users Ultimate goal – accessibility achieved through –Interface design –Search and browsing technologies –In-depth internationalization effort

What is a Social Semantic Digital Library? Social Semantic digital libraries –integrate information from various sources –provide interoperability with other systems (not only libraries) –deliver more robust, user friendly and adaptable search and browsing interfaces empowered by semantics and social networking

10 Ontologies in JeromeDL Structure ( system administrators ): –JeromeDL structure ontology Bibliographic and legacy descriptions ( domain experts and expert users ): –MarcOnt bibliographic ontology –Extensible MarcOnt suggestions Communities ( normal users, expert users with restricted vocabulary ): –FOAF and FOAFRealm identity management ontology –Social semantic collaborative filtering (SSCF) ontology –Semantically Interlinked Online Communities (SIOC) ontology

Ontologies in JeromeDL

12 JeromeDL – Delivering Semantic Content Providing semantic annotations during uploading process: –open module (JOnto) for handling any taxonomies –keywords based on: WordNet free tagging –defining structure of resources in the JeromeDL ontology Lifting legacy metadata to MarcOnt ontology Community maintained annotations –social semantic collaborative filtering –semantic descriptions based on the FOAF metadata

13 JeromeDL – Semantic Information In Use Keyword-based search with semantic query expansion Semantic search: –Direct RDF querying –Natural language templates Social Semantic Collaborative Filtering Faceted Navigation: –creators, –types, –keywords, –topics Heterogeneous communication: –Bibster, A9, OAI

14 JeromeDL - Demo Installation Key features for a registered user –Registering –Browsing (by type, author, keyword, domain), changing view –Information in RSS, RDF, and other from MMS –Expressing semantics (microformats, eRDF, etc.) –Searching (simple, advanced, distributed, semantic) Key features for librarians and administrators –Uploading, updating, approving and removing resources –Reindexing and refreshing

15 Conclusions and Future Work “Research stable” version 2.0 of JeromeDL - after 2 years of research and development JeromeDL realizes the vision of social semantic information spaces Further developed in two streams: –Industrial stabilization and support by DERI Galway –More impact on research in key components: MarcOnt, S3B, HyperCuP and JOnto

16 JeromeDL does answer various expectations with the Digital Library on Social Semantic Information Sources the Future is Now Sebastian Ryszard Kruk DERI, NUI Galway, Ireland sebastian.kruk@deri.org
