Residents of sprawling neighborhoods tend to live in single-family homes and commute by automobile to work. Characteristics of Urban Sprawl include lack of transportation options, lack of pedestrian friendly neighborhoods and increased traffic on arterial roads. Urban sprawl creates health and environmental issues. Residents of sprawling neighborhoods emit more pollution per person and suffer more traffic fatalities. Widening of Existing Roads beyond two lanes in each direction encourages additional sprawl.
