First Period Samuel anointing David David and Goliath And the story when David seemed to fall away from God and his life fell apart

Second Period The difference between David and the Amalekite who came to tell David that Saul and Jonathan had died in battle – 2 approaches to life Conquering grace in the story of David defeating the Jebusites and making their capital city his capital city and renamed it Jerusalem. And then the story of Mephibosheth. A marvellous manifestation of mercy to a miserable man.

Third Period His descent into sin and deception with Bathsheba And looked for God in the wickedness that surrounded David when he returned to Jerusalem having fled the rebellion of his son Absalom. In these 2 chapters David dies and Solomon takes his place on the throne of Israel.

1 Kings 1 & 2 A lot of political intrigue. Adonijah sets himself up as king. Solomon’s mother, Bathsheba gets involved. Solomon is anointed and takes the throne. David gives Solomon advice. David is cold and it seems bed-ridden. A young girl is found to be his hotwater bottle. David dies and quite a few people get killed

Law 1 The law of sowing and reaping It was the inevitable result of things that had been put in place many years before The result of David’s polygamy The result of David being a weak father The result of David and Bathsheba, adultery and murder

Law 1 We reap what we sow! Our choices have consequences. Good choices lead to good consequences. Evil choices lead to evil consequences Making good choices is a result of following God’s Word.

Law 1 Psalm 119:105 “Your Word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.” 1 Chronicles 29:19 “And give my son Solomon the wholehearted devotion to keep Your commands, statutes and decrees…”

Law 2 The law of God’s overruling grace.

Law 2 It overruled Samuel when he went to anoint a new king from Jesse’s sons. It overruled all expectations when David went out to meet Goliath. It overruled Saul’s murderous, jealous rage and protected David. It overruled Jonathan’s claim to the throne and he loved David as God’s anointed king.

Law 2 It overruled David’s own sin and failures as God protected and enriched him. It even overruled the immoral liaison with Bathsheba. It rebuked David and brought him to repentance It brought good out of evil by giving Solomon to David and Bathsheba

A Word of Caution God’s overruling grace does not mean we can and should live any way we want

A Word of Caution The fact that God can bring good out of evil does not mean evil is good. The evil we do will bring heartache and pain just as David’s did. But God is so great that the evil we do never thwarts God’s purposes.

You and Me God still has a plan today The God who calmly worked all things out in David’s life, will not be defeated today We reap what we sow and we can trust God’s grace to be at work in every situation we face It is our responsibility to be aware of these laws and to live in the light of them. It is our responsibility to sow the right crop and to trust in the daily sufficiency and the ultimate victory of God’s grace.
