October 3, 2016 Global II Agenda: DO NOW: DBQ NOTES #8: What were the causes of the Latin American independence movements? CLASS ASSIGNMENT: “Latin American Independence Movements”

What were the causes of the Latin American independence movements What were the causes of the Latin American independence movements? Notes #8

Prior to the 1800s, most of Latin America was made up of Spanish colonies.

In colonial Latin America, the peninsulares controlled most of the political, economic, and social power.  (white Europeans)  (white European descent)  (mixed white/ African/Indian ancestry)

The Napoleonic Wars of the early 1800s weakened Spain’s power and caused the creoles and mestizos to become discontented in the Spanish colonies. Napoleon Bonaparte

Ideas from the Enlightenment and the American and French Revolutions inspired the creoles and mestizos to revolt.

This resulted in Latin American nations winning their independence during the early 1800s.

Latin American independence leaders included: Toussaint L’Ouvertue (leader of Haiti’s independence), . . .

. . . Simón Bolívar and José de San Martín (leaders of independence movements in South America), . . . Simón Bolívar José de San Martín

. . . and Miguel Hidalgo (leader of Mexico’s independence).
