“The one who desires life, to love and see good days, must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.” 1 Peter 3:10; cf. Psalm 34:14

EVIL WORDS DEFILE AND CONDEMN US. “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give an account of it in the day of judgment.” Matthew 12:36

God created man with the ability to communicate. “The LORD said to him, ‘Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the LORD?’” (Exodus 4:11) God communicates to man for man’s well-being. Deuteronomy 32:46-47 Hebrews 1:2; Acts 11:14

God created man with the ability to communicate. Christians are called to communicate in godly ways. 1 Corinthians 1:18, 21 1 Corinthians 14:26 Colossians 4:5-6

Words are to be used for good, but they can bring devastating ruin. “An evil man is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, but the righteous will escape from trouble.” (Proverbs 12:13) “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21)

Words are to be used for good, but they can bring devastating ruin. “Words from the mouth of a wise man are gracious, while the lips of a fool consume him; the beginning of his talking is folly and the end of it is wicked madness.” (Ecclesiastes 10:12-13) “For by your words you will be justified; and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:37)

Unwholesome words are not fitting for Christians, God’s saints. “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth,… no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting” (Ephesians 4:29; 5:4) The Son of God is the Word who became flesh (John 1:1, 14). DO OUR WORDS COMMUNICATE THAT THE WORD IS LIVING IN US?

Unwholesome words are not fitting for Christians, God’s saints. Can our words get us in trouble and cause trouble? Words can cause tension, disharmony, division and even pain. 1 Peter 3:8-9

Unwholesome words are not fitting for Christians, God’s saints. What are some of the trouble-making words that ensnare and entangle us? Lying and deceitful speech (Matthew 5:37) Cursing (James 4:10) Whispering and backbiting (Romans 1:29-30) Filthiness, silly talking, coarse jesting (Ephesians 5:4)
