Read about David’s terrible life. What do you think the key turning points are? Why are these turning points? What elements of change and continuity can you find?

How far was the election of Daniel O’Connell a turning point in the relationship between Britain and Ireland? Subject Objective(s) To understand the role played by Daniel O’Connell. To be able to reach a judgement about his election being a key turning point. Learning Outcomes: D grade – will be able to support an enquiry with a limited range of knowledge. C grade – will be able to support an enquiry with a range of knowledge. B grade – will be able to analyse the strength of the argument created and/or the evidence used. A grade – will be able to reach a substantiated conclusion to your enquiry, focusing on the strength of the evidence presented.

Daniel O’Connell, 14th May 1843 My first object is to get Ireland for the Irish…Old Ireland and liberty! That is what I am struggling for…What numberless advantages would not the Irish enjoy if they possessed their own country? A domestic parliament would encourage Irish manufactures…Irish commerce and protect Irish agriculture. The labourer, the artisan, and the shopkeeper would all be benefited by the repeal of the union…They say we want separation from England, but what I want is to prevent separation taking place…what motive could we have to separate if we obtain all these blessings?...I want you to do nothing that is not open and legal, but if the people unite with me and follow my advice it is impossible not to get the Repeal…there was no pursuit of Roman Catholic interests as opposed to Protestant…the object in view was the benefit of the whole nation. Daniel O’Connell, 14th May 1843 What does O’Connell want? How different is what he wants from what went before? Is this an example of change or continuity?

Evaluation – how much change was there? Think about our themes: Constitutional nationalism Republicanism Unionism How far did these change as a result of O’Connell’s election? Evaluation – how much change was there? Change Continuity

Using Critical Evaluation Now can you use the language of critical evaluation to formulate an argument about one of the historical interpretations that you have been given? e.g Hillyard’s analysis of O’Connell’s election states accurately that it was crucial in developing a new sense of Irish nationalism. This is substantiated by his use of the membership figures of the Repeal Association.

C Grade – What changes occurred as a result of O’Connell’s election? B Grade – How strong is the evidence to support the view that O’Connell’s election was a significant turning point in the relationship between Britain and Ireland? A Grade – ‘Without O’Connell, the Union would have been strengthened’. How far do you agree with this statement?
