Heat Transfer Science Vocabulary 4 Week 3-4

Conduction The transfer of thermal energy by direct contact between objects.

Conductor A substance that allows energy to flow through it.

Convection heat transferred by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas. (fluids)

Electrical When an electrical source is connected in a complete circuit to an electrical device

Electromagnetic Waves can transmit energy through matter or empty space. Example: sunlight

Equilibrium the point at which two objects that are touching reach the same temperature.

Generator A machine that produces electricity by changing energy of motion into electrical energy.

Heat A form of energy that is transferred by a difference in temperature. the transfer of thermal energy between objects that are at different temperatures

Mechanical When objects pull or push on each other

Radiation heat transferred through matter or empty space (no direct contact) by electromagnetic waves.

Temperature A physical property that tells you how hot or cold matter is.

Conductivity A measure of the ability of a material to transfer heat.

Energy The total kinetic energy due to the motion of the atoms in a substance

Insulator a material that does not transfer thermal or electrical energy very well.

Transfer The process whereby heat moves from one body or substance to another.
