War Consumes Europe

Alliance System After the Archduke’s assassination the alliances followed through and supported one another. Under the Schlieffen Plan Germany decided to attack France first because they Russia didn’t have the railroads and roads to get their troops to the Eastern German border as quickly.

Alliances Great Britain entered WWI when Germany invaded neutral Belgium Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire Allies: Great Britain, France, Russia, Japan, Italy

Western Front Western Front – the deadlocked region in northern France Taxicabs rushed soldiers from Paris to the battle at the Marne After the First Battle of the Marne, the Russians were entering the Eastern border of Germany

Western Front Trench Warfare – soldiers fought each other from trenches The space between the trenches was called no man’s land

Tools for War New tools for war Machine Guns Poison Gas Armored Tanks Larger Artillery Did not deliver a fast-moving war Just killed huge numbers of people effectively

Eastern Front The Eastern Front was the battlefield between the German and Russian border Russia hadn’t become industrialized which kept them from being as productive Russia’s only real asset were its huge numbers of soldiers

Aviation Following WWI nations turned their war planes into commercial planes.
