Presentation transcript:

Tuesday 29 September 2009 ‘Count me in!’ Paul Williams

Two years to make a difference The 1000 Lives Campaign is aiming to save an additional 1,000 lives and to avoid up to 50,000 episodes of harm in Welsh healthcare between 21 April 2008 and 21 April 2010.

What’s been achieved? Management buy-in A new focus on using data Local stories – patients own stories Frontline sign up

What’s been achieved? Reductions in hospital mortality A focus on harm

And we have learned about creating change Develop integrated solutions Patient centred High quality, safe and effective care Clinical and managerial leadership Staff involvement at all levels

Clinician Involvement Outcome focus Local interpretation Measurement and peer contest/learning Visible leadership which understands, facilitates, and is consistent

Greenhalgh criteria It must have clear relative advantage It must have compatibility with the user’s values and ways of working Complexity must be minimised Users will adopt more readily if innovations allow trialability There must be observability, that is it must be seen to deliver benefit Reinvention is the propensity for local adaptation

Thank you The commitment and enthusiasm of NHS staff has been amazing – thank you

Why did we need a Campaign? Modern healthcare is increasingly complex Better outcomes Greater risk

Action still needed at all levels: Must measure harm Must ‘Be Open’ Must be the top priority of Boards
