7 Why We Are Here - Patients First
Cancer has been recognised as a priority in West Yorkshire and Harrogate health and care partnership More people die from cancer here than is the average elsewhere in England Every week 250 people are diagnosed and 115 people die. Lung cancer is the most common Screening uptake requires significant improvement Pockets of deprivation where lifestyles associated with development of cancer are prevalent

8 What Are ‘Cancer Services’?
Every service that you come into contact with along your cancer journey, including Cancer Screening Services Your GP Your hospital care Support groups Cancer charities National health promotion campaigns (e.g. Smoking cessation)

9 National Ambitions, Local Delivery
Achieving World Class Cancer Outcomes 96 changes and improvements, including: “Establish a new model for integrated Cancer Alliances at sub-regional level as owners of local metrics and the main vehicles for local service improvement and accountability in cancer (pg66)” Sub region is West Yorkshire and Harrogate (patient flows) Metrics measure what matters Alliance brings together partners across all elements of the patient’s journey

10 A Common Approach Promote the suspension of individual and
corporate interests to work as one single cancer system: “The West Yorkshire and Harrogate cancer system pulling together as one, with common objectives activity breaking down barriers and maximising resources, with the aim of being able to deliver the best possible, seamless and clinically led and patient driven health and social are, so that every person affected by cancer is assured of the best possible outcomes.”

Vehicle for accessing national funding Transformation and delivery at scale and pace Whole pathway focus Using information and evidence to transform patient journeys, changing the behaviours of clinicians and those who determine which services will be commissioned Sharing best practice

Prevent cancer where possible – 40 per cent of cancers are caused by avoidable factors eg environment, lifestyle

14 Early Diagnosis Make more cancer curable through earlier diagnosis
Supporting people to understand and act upon the early signs and symptoms of cancer

Transform the way organisations work together to make sure that cancer treatment, care and support is wrapped around the patient and not purely based on a single condition or organisational boundaries
