Pathways into Adult Social Care What is Adult Social Care? What are the Pathways into Adult Social Care?

Pathways into Adult Social Care Adult social care responds to a wide range of needs – happy faces from a young adult with a learning disability who needs assistance with daily tasks to an elderly person with dementia who needs emotional support as well as personal care. It’s about helping people to live as independently as possible, protecting them from harm and offering essential support in times of need.

Pathways into Adult Social Care Adult social care provision covers a wide range of services including; supporting older people, those with physical or learning disabilities, or physical or mental illnesses. Care and support can be provided within various settings including extra care facilities, residential homes, day centres or within the persons own home.

Pathways into Adult Social Care Helping people live independently and with dignity is an important and fulfilling profession. Opportunities in the Adult Social Care sector are as diverse as the people you are helping. Care is provided in various ways such as personal care (eating, washing, or getting dressed) or for domestic routines (such as cleaning or going to the shops).

Pathways into Adult Social Care If you are interested in working in the adult social care sector, there are lots of options to help you get started. Become an apprentice. Do a traineeship. Join a sector routeway.

Pathways into Adult Social Care Become an apprentice. Apprenticeships are a great option for anyone who’s ready to start work and wants to develop their skills and knowledge in the sector. They include working with a social care employer whilst achieving a qualification (this could be at college), doing skills training and earning a wage. There are different levels of apprenticeships, level 2 Adult Care worker to level 5 Leader in Adult Care. Search for opportunities at www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship.

Pathways into Adult Social Care Do a traineeship. If you don’t feel ready to do an apprenticeship, a traineeship might be a good option for you. They develop your employability skills to help you progress into an apprenticeship or employment. Traineeships are for 16 - 24 year olds who aren’t in employment. They include work preparation training, such as CV writing, support with English and Maths skills, and a work placement. Search for opportunities at www.gov.uk/find-traineeship.

Pathways into Adult Social Care Join a sector routeway. The sector routeway includes a learning programme, which could be achieving the Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care and a work placement. It is a great way to learn more about working in the sector and develop care specific skills to help you get started. At the end of the routeway, you’ll be supported to find permanent work or do more training. Sector routeways are set up by the local employment service such as Jobcentre Plus.
