2 What is a Young Carer? Young Carers are defined as “children and young persons under 18 who provide or intend to provide care, assistance or support to another family member. They carry out, often on a regular basis, significant or substantial caring tasks and assume a level of responsibility that would usually be associated with an adult. The person receiving care is often a parent but can be a sibling, grandparent or other relative who is disabled, has a chronic illness, mental health problem or other condition connected with a need for care, support or supervision (Becker, 2000, p 378).

3 Young Carer Facts- Census data
Research indicates there are estimated to be 700,000 Young carers in the UK There has been an 83 % increase in young carers aged 5-7 years 68% of Young Carers are bullied 46% are getting up in the night to care for loved ones, missing out on their own sleep. More than 80% are carrying out caring duties every day or most days of the week. One in ten young carers go the shops unaccompanied to buy essentials for the family. Three quarters of these children are providing emotional support by cheering up family members when they are sad. Source: Carers Trust 2011 Census

4 What might a Young Carer do ?
Practical Tasks, such as cooking, housework and shopping Physical Care, such as helping someone out of bed Emotional Support, such as talking to someone who is distressed Managing the family budget and collecting prescriptions Helping to give medicine Helping someone communicate Looking after brother and sisters

5 Impact of Caring Missed Childhood
Caring can affect a young persons health, social life and self confidence Caring can affect physical health, most common issues cited include back ache and tiredness Poor mental health and well being, Emotional Difficulties, Self-Harm, Risk Taking Behaviours. Young carers struggle to juggle their education, careers prospects and aspirations which can cause added stress Social Exclusion
