Science Starter 09/05 ON PAGE 14-15 OF YOUR SCIENCE NOTEBOOK: Record the Words across the top Margin of both Pages “Water cohesion Lab: Drops on a penny” Record the following on the first lines of Page 14: Ask Questions: How many water droplets will fit on the surface of a penny? BackGround Research:

Background Research…What do we know about water?

Hypothesis If I __________________________, then ____________________________ because _______________________________________ ____________________________.

INDEPENDENT/DEPENDENT Variables IVDDV: Independent Variable Determines the Dependent Variable Independent variable: What you can change Dependent Variable: What is changed

Procedures Put the penny on a flat surface. Use the eye dropper to drop water on the penny, one drop at a time. Count the number of drops until the water spills over the edge of the penny. Record your data. Repeat steps 1 -4 for a total of 5 trials.

Data Chart Number of drops of water held by a penny 1 2 3 4 5 Average Trial Number of Drops 1   2 3 4 5 Average

COnclusion Did you get the exact same data each time you performed the investigation? Why or why not? Compare your results to the results of your classmates. Did everyone in the class get the same results? Why or why not? What type of things might have been changed from group to group to cause the differences in data?   What was the independent variable?   What was the dependent variable?

In your extra exploration time, you may… Free Time In your extra exploration time, you may… Changing the Independent variable of this experiment Add soap to the Penny Use a different type coin Explore Surface tension with the cups, water, and Paper clips Can you get the paper clips to float on the surface of the water? How many will float?
