1 Making “Cents” of Cohesion
A Water Experiment

2 What is cohesion? – Copy into INB
Cohesion - attraction between molecules of the same substance Two or more water molecules sticking together is an example of cohesion.

3 Penny Experiment – Copy into INB
Question: How many drops of water can fit on top of the penny? Hypothesis: Write down how many drops you think will fit on top of the penny.

4 Penny Experiment – Copy into INB
Copy the table – only use one line for each row Trial Number Number of Drops 1 2 3 Average:

1 beaker filled with water 1 penny Procedure: Fill the dropper with water from the beaker Slowly add drops of water to the top of the penny, counting each drop Write down how many drops you could fit on the penny on your data table

6 What is adhesion? Adhesion: Attraction between molecules of different substances Water flowing from the bottom of a vase up to the top of a plant (flower) is an example of adhesion.
