4 WHY?HOW?OUR AIM Residential energy use represents 28% of EU final energy consumption and is often unknown by the consumer Islands often need to guarantee their energy supply on their own Energy efficiency vital for sustainable development Awareness raising campaigns Main target groups Adoption of selected energy efficiency schemes Home Energy Checks Web-enabled calculators Direct interaction and training/ teaching Cooperation with other islands (DAFNI, ISLENET, ISLE-PACT) Reduction of energy consumption in islands (energy self- sustainability) Support the realisation of the energy targets set by the European Commission for the year 2020 Function as a success story for further European islands

Main lessons learnt so far Approaching and involving the locals from the beginning of the project significantly supports the acceptance of the project and therewith also its success Local actions are popular Home energy checks are very supportive for providing first insights into peoples energy behaviour and fine-tuning the work to the local contexts Key to discovering those energy savings advices that are relevant to the individual households. Interaction and cooperation with municipalities and further decision makers/ intermediary organisations important Actual savings potential savings in kWh and monetary terms 8

What do we expect from the Conference? Inform about our main achievements, raise awareness and interest Exchange information with you and learn from your experiences Replicate our activities in at least 4 selected islands (Action!) 14 islands with different climate, legal/economic conditions, different local behaviours and different needs for energy efficiency and savings Krk (Croatia)Westman islands (Iceland) CyprusSardinia (Italy) Bornholm, Aeroe (Denmark)Madeira (Portugal) Saaremaa (Estonia) Isle of Lewis, Isle of Mull, Isle of Bute (Scotland) Paxos, Syros (Greece)Lanzarote (Spain) 9
