Final exam project guidance Advanced Conversation

How many modules as options? 5 – The Kings’s Speech (Is fear of public speaking real or imagined?) 6 – Is English really a global language? 7 – Should university students have part time jobs?

Too broad or narrow? 5 – The Kings’s Speech (Is fear of public speaking real or imagined?) 6 – Is English really a global language? 7 – Should university students have part time jobs? Broad – general, too many ideas and it’s hard to focus my central idea Narrow – no room, not enough content to explore my central idea

Where to get ideas for central idea? - My experience - Discussions with classmates - Assignment questions - Warm up - other information/ ideas in the reading - Media (movies, multi-media) if available

Brainstorming my central idea “I want to discuss Module…”5-6-7 Specifically …. E.G. ‘some may think that A is true, but I disagree’ E.G. ‘we read that --- and I also believe…” E.G. “I’m here to discuss 2 sides of…A , B…”

Using a template to guide discussion Template – required or just an example? Let’s check it out now.

First I’m here to discuss the issue of _______________ . My name is _____________, and I attend the Advanced English Conversation class # 006/ 007 on _____ (Day) at ______ (time).

Second During the second half of the semester, we covered some modules in class such as ______________. The one that really got my interest was ________________. You know, I didn’t ever really have a chance to think deeply on such issues

third For me, the main points are _________________________. -?

fourth I want to share my view on (your side of the issue __________). Some may think that _________________, and/ but I disagree/I agree because ____________________.

Fifth Evidence/ support If we see the evidence supplied in the reading/ research (done by you from an outside source/ or my opinion _________

Sixth Personal relevancy / link from class to your life In my personal experience ___________________. I can link that to what we learned in class because __________________.

Seventh After thinking about it carefully, I am sure you will agree (or disagree!) that ________________________. Today I have discussed _________________. ________________. and ______________________. *reminds your audience, tries to attract/persuade, reviews

Eighth Why does your opinion matter? Why should I care about listening to your message? I am happy to have had the chance to share this with you. I feel that expressing my mind via modern, global issues has really _______________________________________. OR Overall, __________________________ Thank you.

rubric 1. Interesting content analysis – your basis for discussion and reason for examining/ exploring the idea catches my attention 2. Arrival to conclusion is sensible – I understand your story line step by step and how you make a final decision on what you discuss, controlled within time limit 3. Application of class material – you clearly understood and selected an idea, piece of information, and used it in your monologue, I have no doubt about it 4. Audience awareness – you understand that you are speaking to ME even though we are not in the same room, but that I am listening to you. Keep my attention! Care! Use communication techniques to make me listen to you appropriate to your topic/ story. 5. Clarity and speed of speech – clarity: I have no trouble understanding tone and pronunciation, no outside interference; speed – natural, normal rhythm and timing, not nervously fast or strangely slow

Submission and results Since it’s the end of semester, you will not receive a paper results rubric. I will respond to your email with final exam score only. You’ll need to wait until semester finishes and total scores are calculated to know overall final grade.

Wrap up Partner project or solo project? Send to professor’s email gnuenglanglit@zoho.com ? Including /not including what? Are you told what to think/ say/ believe? Do you select your own module? Your own central idea? Your own development? Due dates: 006/ before 11 am 007 before 4 pm Tues, Dec. 11
