1 WAC Topic Exploration

2 First, grab your quote and notebook paper you wrote your quote on and find a partner at a table other than your “normal” table! 1

3 Share with your partner: Your quote and what you think it means.
Do you agree with your quote? Disagree? Why? Ask your partner what s/he thinks about your quote. (this is to get an idea of what your audience might think.) 2

4 Share with your new partner your quote, and then:
Brainstorm with your partner about potential topics that could be discussed (or that you are already considering for a topic)– think in very general matters: college, friendship,fear, love, dreams . . . (remember the quote doesn’t HAVE to be the focus of your presentation!) 3

5 Share with your new partner one or some of the topics that interested you – talk for a minute about what approach to take to create interest for your classmates. What aspect of the topic might the class be interested in? You might want to start by saying: Something important for our class to be aware of is (think about the overall message you want to share!) 4

6 With your new partner ask him/her five brief questions about the topic you might be addressing Be creative – this might help you open up or narrow your topic! 5

7 So, what is the purpose of this piece of writing?
You are going to communicate orally a piece of your own writing. Not only will your words be important, but how you convey your own words will also be critical! You will not have to memorize your piece, you will be able to read from your paper – but we will want to keep in mind all of the scintillating presentation skills we have discussed!

8 Your Quote Introduction: Last Name A through H Body:
Last Name I through O Conclusion: Last Name P through Z

9 You Will Need Four Rhetorical Devices (1 MUST be parallelism)
10 Vocabulary Words 2-3 minutes, you will be stopped! -10 points if you go under or over! To dress up! Either specific to your essay or “interview style”

10 You Will Need A visual representation of your thesis – this will need to be on a power point slide that you to me. This slide cannot have any words. The picture/collection of pictures will be up as you present and these will be due to me on Tuesday, November 4th.

12 Share with your new partner what ideas you have generated for your topic have him/her give you feedback on what you are thinking . . . 6
