1 Dealing with Rules

2 Rules- A Review We know that: Next week, we will learn:
Rules are in place for our safety and success Rules should be followed, even when no one is watching Next week, we will learn: When/how we can try to change a rule How to disagree appropriately But today, we will learn: How to respond to being told “no” What to do if we break a rule

3 Making Choices Each of us makes our own choices. These choices have positive or negative consequences. Positive consequences: Good things that happen because of your behavior Negative consequences: Annoying, frustrating, or bad things that happen because of your behavior If you break a rule (whether you meant to or not), the next appropriate step is to accept the (usually negative) consequences of breaking that rule.

4 Accepting Consequences
These are the steps for accepting consequences: Show a calm face and a listening body Demonstrate understanding by nodding and saying “ok” (or something like “ok”) Wait for another time to disagree/object to the consequence Restate the consequence in your own words so that people know you understand what is happening Say that you will do things better in the future or no longer break that rule Thank the person for caring enough about your safety and success that they want you to follow rules

5 Your turn: Role-Play In partners or groups, you will write and act out an Accepting Consequences Role-Play. You have 15 minutes to write and practice your role-play. Your role-play will include: More than 5 but less than 10 lines (turns speaking) The appropriate steps for accepting consequences School-appropriate and reality-based topics As each group presents, the audience should check the Accepting Consequences checklist to see if the students are following the appropriate steps.

6 Reflection and Assessment
You will now write a reflection and draw a picture about what you have learned in the last week about rules. While you do that, I will bring each of you to my desk. One at a time, you will show me how to appropriately accept consequences. You can use the check-list as a guide. Reflection sentence starters: This week, I finally understood that… Yesterday, I learned that… Something that was really hard for me this week was… Something I learned that will really help me is… Now that I know about ______, I have questions about ___________...
