Learning English Through Social Issues Year-end project Fine-tuning of Language Police on the Medium of Instruction Class:2D Group:6 Members: Karen Ho Ivy Wong Angela Chan Kate Lau Target interviewees:Principal and school administrators

From 5 April to 8 April, we did a survey about the fine-tuning of the language police on the medium of instruction. Our group has interviewed the principal and three teacher about their opinios on the policy and asked each of them seven questions.

Q1.Do you support the fine-tuning of language policy on MOI?

Question one is Do you support the fine-tuning of language policy on MOI? We found that three of the interviewees gave a positive response.

Q2.Based on previous English results, do you think our school can use English to teach students?

Question tow is Based on our previous English results,do you think our school can use English to teach students? Three out of the four interviewees said that they think our school can use English to teach students.

Q3.Do you think we can attract more capable students to study in our school if we have more English-medium classes?Why?

Question three is Do you think we can attract more capable students to study in our school if we have more English-medium classes and why? Most of the respondents agreed that we can attract more capable student to study in our school if we have more English-medium classes and they also think that Kei Long students can do it.

Q4.How many English-medium classes do you plan to have in F.1 next year?

Question four is How many English- medium classes do you plan to have in F.1 next year? One of the respondent said that he will plan to have one English-medium next year and one of the respondent suggest having five classes in F.1 next year and have two respondent said that they was not sure yet.

Q5.How far do you think students can improve their standard of English if they study in English- medium class?

Question five is How far do you think students can improve their standard of English if they study in English-medium class? Half of the respondents thought that students can improve their standard of English a lot if they study in English-medium class? One of the respondent thought that students can improve their standard of English to some extent if they study in English- medium class? And one of the respondents thought that it just helps them a little.

Q6.Which of the following do you think is the best mode of medium of instruction for students of this school?

Question six is Which of the following do you think is the best mode of medium of instruction for students of this school? Three out of the four interviewees said that English textbooks & exam papers are used and teachers explain things in English.

Q7.Do you think CMI schools will be marginalised in future?Why?

The last question is Do you think CMI school will be marginalised in future and why? One of the respondent said that CMI school will be marginalisedin future and two of the respondents said it will not and one of the respondent said not sure.
