Survey The survey was constructed to see if the generation difference between survey takers would determine their beliefs of cell phones and social media being used in the classroom.

Hypotheses 1.) People who are part of the older generation will reject cell phones in the classroom, but people who are in the younger generation will be more accepting of cell phones in the classroom. 2.) People of all generations will be accepting of social media in the classroom.

Respondents The respondents that took the survey varied in age and gender. A majority of them were female and 18-25.

The Survey The survey was divided into two parts: Cell phones and social media. Each question asked the respondents about their opinions on if these two things should be used in the classroom. They would answer by circling a 1-5 answer. 5=Strongly agree, 3=neutral, and 1=strongly disagree.

Results: Cell Phones I was actually surprised to see that a majority of the respondents said that cell phones do not have a place in the classroom. Question 4 asked: “If you were a teacher, would you allow cell phones in the classroom?” The average for this question was 3.15. Also, only one person 26-35 gave a one for this question. Other older respondents answered with fours or fives.

Cell Phones Conclusion My hypothesis did not hold true. The Older respondents were more inclined to accept the cell phones. The younger respondents agreed that the cell phones would be more of a distraction and should not be allowed.

Results: Social Media Most of the respondents, of all ages, were neutral with having social media in the classroom. Question 8 asked: “Social media has a place in the classroom.” The average response was a 3.8.

Social Media Conclusion With the results, I believe that more people would allow social media use in class more than cell phones. The reason is, they can use social media for collaboration. Also, a lot of the respondents, mostly the older ones, stated that they use social media for professional purposes. This could mean that they would teach students to use it for more than following their friends.
