Individual Cultural Competence and critical self-reflection VN2018.1

What takes more understanding What is easy to see about culture? What takes some time to see about culture? What takes more understanding @2018 IRG.

Culture influences Meaning of non-verbal communication and gestures How we show respect and disrespect Common sense, common courtesy Beliefs about role of time, past & future “Right” and “wrong” Role of children, role of seniors Appropriate healthcare Definitions of power Conflict resolution Pause theory @2018 IRG.

Common misunderstandings Assuming others have the same values and beliefs about the world Equating race with culture (using only appearance to assume cultural background) Believing one’s own culture is the best Believing that cultural neutrality is good enough Relying on professional competence alone The checkbox approach San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training @2018 IRG.

Life-long learning journey Skills Knowledge Values and Attributes Culturally humble practice Critical self-reflection Building and sustaining relationship Skill and practice of ALLY Cultural competence and racism History of Canada and colonization Impact of racism on health Professional sub-culture Willingness to learn from others Equity and human rights Address power imbalance Strength-based @2018 IRG.

Critical self-reflection When I am about to interact with an Indigenous person, what stereotypes do I hold? Have I acted on assumption, or did I ask my client to learn more about his/her perspective? Do I challenge the assumption of status quo? Do I demand a western- based scientific evidence-base model and perspective, when my client may not? Do my judgements of others affect how I listen to them? How would I know? Do I seek the perspective of my peers and clients on my cultural competence? Am I ready to learn more, to do better? @2018 IRG.
