FOREWORD Welcome to Mrs. Grant’s class. I am here to teach; you are here to learn. I am also here to learn, and you—to teach! Positive attitude is the key of success. Let’s keep that attitude all the time… or at least fake it.

WHY DO WE HAVE PROCEDURES? A procedure is the way that we do things. To do things right, we have to follow some simple procedures, for example: To open a lock, you have to select your combination as directed by the lock manufacturer. To make a phone call, you need to enter the numbers in the correct order. So, to be successful in learning, you need to follow some simple procedures.

ENTRANCE Make sure you have all necessary materials (binder, paper, pencil too, books) for the class. Enter the classroom as a professional student. Pick up your assignments on black metal files on top of file cabinets by door, then sit in your assigned seat. Place your homework on the upper right hand corner of the desk, and take out your Interactive Reader (from under desk). Take a moment of silence, then do your opener.

WHEN THE BELL RINGS You are in your assigned seat quietly working; otherwise, you are marked tardy. Immediately start the Opener that you have been given. You will self-correct your Opener. When you finish, look at today’s agenda on the board, work on completing your Cornell notes, homework, or read your book quietly.

STAR Sit up Track Ask & answer like a college student Respect those around you

DURING INSTRUCTION For directions, read and track the speaker. No pencil sharpening, or asking to use the restroom during instruction. Save personal questions for time between activities. Ask permission to speak by raising your hand. STAY ON TOPIC WITH QUESTIONS. If you need to ask a neighbor a quick question do it quietly. i.e. “What page? Where are we?”After instruction, make sure you understand the concept. If not, ask, “What did you mean by___________? I don’t get the part on ____________?”

Seat Signals Instruction is the Goal Two fingers crossed=bathroom Left hand pinching nose=tissue Hold up pencil=need to sharpen One finger=need pencil Raise hand=question

WHILE YOU ARE WORKING First make sure you read or listen to the directions about your work and understand them. If you didn’t understand, raise your hand and quietly wait for the teacher to come by and explain it. If you are asked to help, be polite and kind and offer your best. Talking to each other should be no louder than necessary. Use your library whisper. Respect each other and be friendly. Use your time wisely. Put forth your best effort to finish your work on time. If not done, make arrangements to work at lunch or after school.

AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED YOUR ASSIGNMENT Check the directions and your work one more time to see if you missed anything or did something incorrectly. Remain quiet and work on other assignments or read a library book.

DISMISSAL and CLEAN-UP Clean up your desk. Pick up the floor papers. Put garbage in trash can (passed around). Wait for Mrs. Grant to dismiss you. The ringing of the bell does not dismiss you.

PLANNING PROCEDURE Daily plans are written on the whiteboard. Weekly assignment checklist given on 1st day each week. Keep in binder for reference. To check Mrs.Grant’s webpage: www.sanjuan.edu/webpages/pgrant/ Mrs. Grant’s web page includes: Weekly Assignment Checklist All PowerPoints Worksheets References (Writing) Homework

WHEN YOU ARE TARDY Hand the Tardy slip from the tardy sweep to the teacher. Sit down quietly. You will not be excused from any work you missed for being tardy OR ABSENT. Quietly get the assignment from a classmate and begin.

CLASSROOM GUIDELINES Classroom Norms will be posted on the wall: Bring all necessary materials to class: binder, paper, pencil, too. BOOKS! Be in your seat doing your opener when the bell rings. No food or drinks allowed; spills happen. Always act and speak in a professional manner. Swearing and put-downs are never appropriate. Wear acceptable, appropriate, school clothing. Electronic equipment is only used with the permission of your teacher.

CONSEQUENCES FOR VIOLATION OF RULES Warning Plan of Action completed. After School Detention with Phone Call Home Parent conference Referral: swearing, fighting or defiance result in a referral Referral is an automatic D in citizenship; it is NOT average.

Is this class difficult? Yes, but you can do it. Hang in there!

I know you’ll do your Best! Mrs. Grant
