Task: Match the definition to the key terms: Health, Exercise, Fitness, Performance …the ability to meet the demands of the environment. …a state of complete mental, physical and social well-being, and not merely, the absence of disease or infirmity. …how well a task is completed. …a form of physical activity which maintains or improves health and physical fitness.

Health Health is defined as… …a state of complete mental, physical and social well-being, and not merely, the absence of disease or infirmity. So a healthy person is: physically well mentally well socially happy free from disease.

Exercise Exercise is defined as… …a form of physical activity which maintains and improves health and physical fitness. It is important to understand that ‘exercise’ is not the same as ‘sport’. Exercise can be any physical activity, even just going for a short walk. Sport tends to be competitive in some way.

Fitness Fitness is defined as… Fitness is not necessarily about how far you can run or how good you are at sport. Being fit means being physically able to cope with the demands of everyday life. These demands will vary from person to person, depending on things like lifestyle, occupation and age. …the ability to meet the demands of the environment. A fit person is able to make short journeys on foot or on a bike.

Performance Performance is defined as… …how well a task is completed. Having good health related fitness allows you to perform tasks well. 5 components: cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, body composition. Cardiovascular fitness stops performers becoming too tired during activities like netball and swimming. Muscular strength helps performers produce power and support weights – this is especially important in sports like climbing. Muscular endurance prevents a performer’s muscles becoming fatigued. Flexibility allows a performer a greater range of movement, which is important in sports like climbing which involve reaching and bending. Having the appropriate body composition enables sportspeople to perform at their best, as they will not be carrying extra weight which could slow them down and make them tired. The also have enough energy reserves to compete effectively. Definition © Edexcel.
