In the History of Information Technology 2006-2010 In the History of Information Technology

Major Trends Dematerialization Rise in societal adoption of social media Web 2.0 The advent of crowd funding sites such as Kickstarter Use of crowd sourcing sites such as Ushahidi as a tool for disaster relief

Twitter Twitter is founded in March of 2006 Founded by Evan Williams, Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass and Biz Stone in San Francisco, CA By July the site was up and running allowing users to send and receive 140-character text messages, known as tweets By February of 2010, Twitter was churning out 50 million tweets per day

Web 2.0 Not a change in how the web is set up Rather, it is a change in how pages are made and how people use them It is about harnessing collective intelligence Characterized by the change from simple web pages to dynamic, user-generated content thanks to the rise of social media. According to the Web2Summit, “1990-2004 was the match being struck; 2005-2009 was the fuse; and 2010 will be the explosion.”

The Growth and Dominance of FB In January of 2009 FB had 150M users, by September 2010 there were 550M and its users spent a collective 50B minutes on FB

Online Streaming Hulu founded in March of 2007 Allowed users to watch content online for free, granted that they watch a several ads Netflix, a subscription-based DVD rental service that operated through the mail As the movie rental business was making a downturn, in 2008 Netflix began to offer web-streamed content in their subscription-based format This was all possible advances in video streaming technology and the fact that such services were becoming increasingly accessible for the average individual

The iPhone The original iPhone was released on June 29, 2007 It was originally available in 4 GB for $499 or 8 GB for $599 It was a phone, a camera, a handheld computer and an iPod all in one sleek device (+ much more) There was so much demand people lined up outside Apple stores days in advance of the initial release http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aM2fQqgq_vM

The Rise of Crowdfunding Kickstarter was launched on April 28, 2009 Ventures could be funded through online donations In exchange for donation, donors receive a finished product or other token of appreciation determined by how much they donated.

Online Music Streaming Pandora was an online radio service founded in 2000 For just about 9 years it was on the verge of going out of business Struck gold in 2009 with an iPhone app

The iPad The first iPad was released April 3, 2010 It was available in 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB You didn’t even know you needed it until…You did. Rather quickly adopted, for use in kiosks, the classroom, the home or office

2010 Earthquake in Haiti Showcased how social media, crowdfunding, and crowdsourcing technologies could be used in disaster relief The Red Cross utilized twitter to send message that "You can text "HAITI" to 90999 to donate $10 to Red Cross relief efforts in #haiti.” This tweet raised over 7 million dollars for relief efforts in just 4 days Ushahidi, a crowdsourced app, saved many lives

The Information Age By 2010, it was more than clear that advancements in computing technology had made the world a very different place in a short amount of time “The smartphone revolution has moved the Web from our desks to our pockets. Collective intelligence applications are no longer being driven solely by humans typing on keyboards but, increasingly, by sensors. Our phones and cameras are being turned into eyes and ears for applications; motion and location sensors tell where we are, what we’re looking at, and how fast we’re moving. Data is being collected, presented, and acted upon in real time. The scale of participation has increased by orders of magnitude.” - Tim O’Reilly, Web2Summit.com
