Essential Question- page 105: What are the characteristics of a healthy relationship? What must all relationships have in order to be considered “healthy”?

Ground Rules Respect each other’s point of view, even if it is different from yours. Raise your hand. Your thoughts are important and we don’t want to miss anyone’s ideas by having several people talk at once. Confidentiality. Do not use names or other identifying information when speaking about unhealthy relationships involving friends or family members. The stories shared in the room stays in the room, but share all the educational information learned. No put downs. It is ok to pass

Discussion Questions Who are people in your life that make you feel good about being yourself? Why? What are the characteristics or qualities you look for in a friend? Does it matter if the friend is a guy or a girl? Why/Why not? Should you look for the same qualities in a boyfriend or girlfriend as in a friend? Can you choose how you want to be treated in a dating relationship?

Discussion Questions (Continued) How do you want your teachers and coaches to treat you- is respect given or is it earned? How do you think you should treat your teachers and coaches- is respect a given or is it earned? How do you want to be treated by your parents? Do you get along with your parents? Why or why not? If your best friend were bossy, cruel, or aggressive toward you, you’d probably find a new best friend. But some people think it’s OK to tolerate such behavior from a partner. Why?

Health Walk! We will walk as a class to the library and back to the classroom. The first lap is required, 2nd lap is optional No sitting in the commons- students must walk on health walks Students have a 10-15 minute limit- if they are not back to class on time, they will be marked absent for the day.

8 Characteristics of Healthy Relationships Respect – Being accepted and allowed to be who you are. Safety – Feeling safe both emotionally and physically. Support – Caring for you and want what is best for you. Individuality – Feeling like you can be yourself; after all, being an individual is what makes you, you! Fairness and Equality – Having an equal say in your relationships. Acceptance –Friends or girlfriend/boyfriend accepting you for whom you really are. Honesty and Trust – Honesty builds trust. You can’t have a healthy relationship without trust Communication – Talking face-to-face (not just by text) about your feelings.

Unhealthy Relationships- page 105 Write down 3: Using threats:  Making and/or carrying out threats of hurting you; threatening to leave you, threatening to commit suicide Using intimidation:  Making you afraid by using looks, actions, gestures; smashing things; destroying your property; abusing pets; displaying weapons. Using emotional abuse:  Putting you down; calling you names; playing mind games; humiliating you; making you feel guilty; making you think you're crazy; making you feel bad about yourself. Using isolation:  Controlling what you do, who you see and talk to, what you read, where you go; limiting your outside involvement; using jealousy to justify actions. Denying:  Making light of the abuse and not taking your concerns about it seriously Abusing authority:  Treating you like a servant; making all big decisions; acting like the "master of the castle"; being the one to define roles in the relationship. Using economic abuse:  Preventing you from getting or keeping a job; making you ask for money; giving you an allowance; taking your money.

How to Help a Friend How would you help a friend that is in an unhealthy relationship? Tell them what you have seen, heard or felt and that you are worried for them- be sure to use “I” statements. For example, “I feel worried about you because I saw your boyfriend make fun of you.” Listen and don’t judge your friends Encourage them to talk to an adult they trust

Diversity among Relationships In relationships, people can have a variety of different characteristics. Write down 3: Age Disability National origin Race Marital Status Sexual Orientation Gender

Tolerance for Diversity Tolerance- the ability or willingness to be kind to someone, even if their lifestyle or choices they make are different than yours. It is important to treat EVERYONE with respect, regardless of their differences.
