The Last of The Mohicans Dir. Michael Mann, 1992

The Last of the Mohicans The film is adapted from the book of the same name, which is part of a series written by James Fennimore Cooper. The book was written in 1826, and is about the death of the last member of a tribe of East Coast Native Americans that have been devastated by the arrival of European setters in America. When Europeans came to the Americas a combination of their diseases and violent acts killed up to 90% of the native populations of the Americas.

The Last of the Mohicans The book and film are set in 1757 during the French and Indian War. The French and Indian War was part of a larger world war, called the Seven Years War, fought between France and England over their world colonies.

The French and Indian War The story takes place in the disputed territories at and around Fort William Henry in New York state. http://www.loc.gov/teachers/classroommaterials/connections/france-america/thinking2.html

The Last of the Mohicans The action takes place on the southern tip of Lake George. It is 1757 and General George Monro has just been given command of the fort.

The Last of the Mohicans Munro had about 2,300 troops- British soldiers and local militia. In late July Munro got word that the French, under General Montcalm were coming to take the Fort. http://davenation.com/photos/adirondacks/Fort%20William%20Henry%20at%20Lake%20George.png

The Last of the Mohicans The French had over 8,000 men. They attacked the Fort for days, and when it became clear that the other British general in the area, General Webb, was not sending reinforcements, Munro surrendered. http://www.cmhg.gc.ca/cmh/book_images/high/v2_c1_s08_ss00_01.jpg

Massacre of Fort William Henry As the civilians and soldiers left the Fort to go to Fort Edward the Algonquin allies of General Montcalm massacred and scalped the British, perhaps as many as 1,500.
