The idea behind LEAP Water Requirement Costs Weather data Satisfaction Crop + soil coefficients Water Requirement Satisfaction Index (WRSI) for Crops + Rangelands Number of Beneficiaries for Livelihood Protection Costs (Livelihood Protection Cost Index LPCI) Many intermediate products that have proven to be useful

LEAP is being developed by DRMFSS, Mattewos Hunde, GoE WorldBank financing through GFDRR (Wout Soer) WFP Rome, initiator, Niels Balzer, Vanessa Cardamone, Giuditta De Simone, Ida Mattfolk) WFP/VAM Addis, overall guidance, data delivery and feedback from the field (Elliot Vhurumuku – Teshome Erkineh and Dr Muktar Reshid) National Meteorlogical Agency provides data and feedback. CSA and MoARD have provided data FEWSNet (Nigist Biru) and / USGS / NOAA provide data and methods International Consultants (Sandro Calmanti of ENEA and Peter Hoefsloot)

Looking backwards (1) Software now in version 2.20 Server running for 2 years. Continuously provided new data through mail and internet. Forecasting bulletins in growing seasons Trained almost 100 professionals from DRMFSS, WFP, NMA, regional organisations, Ministry of Water Resources etc. Server in Addis acquired Improved beneficiary number estimation (with ENEA, Sandro Calmanti) Rangeland WRSI calculations Floods (with ITHACA, Turin)

Looking backwards (2) NMA provides rainfall and ET0 data as input for LEAP Technical support through mail Training missions Italy and the Netherlands (June 2010)

Looking forward (1) New phase with World Bank Support (WFP Rome, WFP Addis, WB Addis) Climate Change dataset 1980 – 2050 Improved Rangeland Monitoring (ENEA and PH) Operational Flood Monitoring (Ithaca) Additions to the LEAP software (25 points) by PH Localising input data for LEAP (planting dates, water holding capacity of soils etc.etc.) Ato Teshome and Dr. Mukthar Two-way HEA integration with Lorraine Coulterof Livelihoods Integration Unit. Very promising!

Looking forward (2) Verification of LEAP intermediate and final products Introduction at national and regional levels Complete hand over to government (DRMFSS)

LEAP is free software and data (1995 - 2010 Download from LEAP page http://vam.wfp.org/leap (program + data = 76MB) Manual Tutorial
