Lesson Eleven Study Questions How was the ascension of Shallum to the throne a fulfillment of prophecy? Lesson Eleven Study Questions

Jehu had been told by the Lord that his sons would sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation (2 Kings 10:30). Zechariah, assassinated by Shallum, was the fourth generation descendant of Jehu. The prophecy did not justify what Shallum did, but merely anticipated it. ANSWER

Question # 2 What atrocity did Menahem commit at Tiphsah? Lesson Eleven Study Questions

ANSWER Menahem “came from Tirzah” to Samaria and assassinated Shallum. The location of Tiphsah is uncertain. Menahem attacked Tiphsah “because they did not surrender” and when he took the city he ripped open all the women with child (15:16). Did Tiphsah resist Menahem as the new king? In 2 Kings 8:12, the prophet Elisha predicted that Hazael, whom the prophet anointed, would “rip open [Israelite] women with child.” Hazael's response to the prophecy (vs. 13) indicates that even this Syrian recognized the cruelty involved. ANSWER

Lesson Eleven Study Questions How much tribute did Menahem pay to Assyria and how did he raise this money? Lesson Eleven Study Questions

Menahem paid 1,000 talents of silver to Pul, king of Assyria Menahem paid 1,000 talents of silver to Pul, king of Assyria. He raised the money by taxing all the wealthy in Israel the amount of fifty shekels of silver (15:19-20). It would take 60,000 wealthy men, each paying 50 shekels apiece, to cover 1,000 talents of silver (Davis & Whitcomb, Israel: From Conquest to Exile, p. 429). The king of Assyria described his relationship with Menahem as follows: “As for Menahem, I overwhelmed him like a snowstorm and he...fled like a bird, alone, and bowed to my feet.” ANSWER

Question # 4 By what other name is Pul more commonly known? Lesson Eleven Study Questions

Pul was also known as Tiglath-Pileser III (2 Kings 15:29; see 1 Chronicles 5:26), perhaps the greatest king among the Assyrians. One of the greatest military commanders in world history, conquering much of what was known to the Assyrians ANSWER

Question # 5 How long did Pekahiah reign and who brought his reign to a close? Lesson Eleven Study Questions

Pekahiah reigned two years (15:23) Pekahiah reigned two years (15:23). Pekah, son of Remaliah and one of the officers of Pekahiah, conspired against Pekahiah and assassinated him with the help of a company of men from Gilead. It is suggested by commentators that the reign of Pekah should be dated from nearly the beginning of that of Menahem, indicating that Pekah was a contender (probably from Transjordan) for the throne.
