WHY? It’s the Law. ACT No. 2012-402 requires the State Superintendent of Education to develop a school grading system reflective of school and district performance. State-authorized assessments and other key performance indicators were used to create a profile of the School and School System. Each School and School System in the State of Alabama has been assigned a letter grade in accordance with State Legislation. Academic Achievement Achievement Level Weight Level I Level II 0.5 Determined based on student achievement levels in reading and math utilizing assessments in tested grades. Academic Achievement scores reported in January 2018 are based on 2016-2017 data for students in grades 3-8 and 10 from the ACT Aspire and the Alabama Alternate Assessment (AAA). Achievement Level Weight Level I Level II 0.5 Level III 1.0 Level IV 1.25 Achievement levels are used to describe student performance on the state assessments.  - Level 4 - exceeds grade level standards (exceeds) - Level 3 - meets grade level standards (ready) - Level 2 - partially meets grade level standards (close)  - Level 1 - does not meet grade level standards​ (needs support) Levels 3 and 4 are proficient. Chronic Absenteeism Determined based on the percent of students who missed 15 or more days (both excused and unexcused). Graduation Rate Determined based on the percentage of high school students who graduated within 4 or 5 years of first entering the 9th grade. The 4-Year Graduation Cohort for the January 2018 report card is calculated 1 year in arrears. The 5-Year Graduation Cohort for the January 2018 report card is calculated 2 years in arrears. College and Career Readiness Determined based on the percentage of students in the 4-year cohort who met at least one of the College and Career Readiness Indicators. The College and Career Readiness Indicators are:   Benchmark on any ACT Subtest (English -18, Reading -22, Mathematics -22, Science-23) Qualifying Score on Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) Exam (AP Exams - 3,4,5 IB Exam - 4,5,6,7) Military Enlistment Approved Transcript College or Postsecondary Credit while in High School Silver Level or Higher on the ACT WorkKeys Approved Industry Credentials

BCS Next Steps/Action Plan Develop a success map that charts our path forward to improving academic achievement. Implement a set of internally developed criteria that will be used to expand and measure student achievement. Create an accountability report, based on established guidelines, that monitors academic progress across the system.
