Birmingham City Schools Report Card Indicators Presentation Topic A-F Report Card Review of the Law Report Card Indicators Report Card Prototype Questions and Answers

WHY? It’s the Law. ACT No. 2012-402 requires the State Superintendent of Education to develop a school grading system reflective of school and district performance. State-authorized assessments and other key performance indicators were used to create a profile of the School and School System. Each School and School System in the State of Alabama has been assigned a letter grade in accordance with State Legislation. Start with the law behind what we are doing… It is the legislature that wants this.

Academic Achievement Achievement Level Weight Level I Level II 0.5 Determined based on student achievement levels in reading and math utilizing assessments in tested grades. Academic Achievement scores reported in January 2018 are based on 2016-2017 data for students in grades 3-8 and 10 from the ACT Aspire and the Alabama Alternate Assessment (AAA). Achievement Level Weight Level I Level II 0.5 Level III 1.0 Level IV 1.25 Achievement levels are used to describe student performance on the state assessments.  - Level 4 - exceeds grade level standards (exceeds) - Level 3 - meets grade level standards (ready) - Level 2 - partially meets grade level standards (close)  - Level 1 - does not meet grade level standards (needs support) Levels 3 and 4 are proficient. Academic Achievement 𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑆𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑅𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟 Academic Achievement  x 100 = Academic Achievement 𝐼𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟 Score

Academic Growth Growth Category Weight SGP Low (L) 25 % or less Determined based on individual Student Growth Percentile (SGP) – which measures students who demonstrate improvement in reading and math from one year to the next using multiple years of data. Academic Growth scores reported in January 2018 are based on 2016-2017 data for students in grades 4-8 and 10 from the ACT Aspire. Growth Category Weight SGP Low (L) 25 % or less Average (A) 1.00 25%- 75% High (H) 1.50 75% or more The Academic Growth indicator score is based on the weighted growth categories outlined in the table. Chronic Absenteeism Determined based on the percent of students who missed 15 or more days (both excused and unexcused). Chronic Absenteeism points are based on students present (by subtracting the Chronic Absenteeism Indicator Score from 100 before multiplying by the Chronic Absenteeism weight).   𝑵𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝟗𝒕𝒉 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒉 𝑨𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑹𝒆𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝟏𝟓 𝒐𝒓 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝑨𝒃𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒔 𝑻𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑵𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝟗𝒕𝒉 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒉 𝑨𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 ∗ 𝟏𝟎𝟎 = 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒄 𝑨𝒃𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒆𝒊𝒔𝒎 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓 𝑺𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆

Graduation Rate Determined based on the percentage of high school students who graduated within 4 or 5 years of first entering the 9th grade. The 4-Year Graduation Cohort for the January 2018 report card is calculated 1 year in arrears. The 5-Year Graduation Cohort for the January 2018 report card is calculated 2 years in arrears. COHORT PERCENTAGE 4-Year 80% 5 Year 20%
