Types of Joints Flash Cards

Hinge Joint

Hinge Joint Extensive forward & backward motion Limited to one direction Elbow allows you to bend your lower arm. Ex’s: knees, elbows & in fingers & toes.

Ball & Socket Joint

Ball & Socket Joint Allows bones to move up, down, forward, backward and in a complete circle. Greatest range of motion of all the joints. Ex’s: hips & shoulders

Pivot Joint

Pivot Allows one bone to rotate around another. Allows you to move your head side to side. Ex: base of skull/neck & lower arm.

Sliding Joint

Sliding Joint Flat bones allow one bone to slide over another. Move front to back and limited side to side. Ex’s: ankles, wrists & vertebrae (back bones)

Immovable Dovetail Joint (in woodworking)

Immovable Allows very little or no movement Also called fixed joints Ex: skull & pelvis
