Mrs. Jennifer Howard

2 Why do we need bones? Bones protect our vital organs!
Bones give us shape! Bones allow us to move!

3 How Many Bones Do You Have?
When you were born, you had around 350 bones in your body! When you become an adult, you will only have 206 bones. Why? Your bones fuse together and grow as you grow!

4 4 categories of Bones 1. Long Bones 2. Short Bones 3. Flat Bones
4. Irregular Bones

5 Long Bones These bones include : thigh, leg, arm, and forearm.
These Bones are longer than they are wide. These bones include : thigh, leg, arm, and forearm.

6 Short Bones Consist of the bones in the wrist and ankle

7 Flat Bones These bones are thin, flattened and usually curved
The cranium (or skull) is made up of mostly flat bones!

8 Irregular Bones Have many shapes, sizes, and surface features.
These bones include the vertebrae and facial bones.

9 How do bones move? Joints where two bones come together
Joints where two bones come together hold the bones together and allow for movement of the skeleton.

10 Ball and Socket Joints The hips and shoulders contain ball-and-socket joints One bone has a rounded end that fits into a cuplike cavity on another bone Provides a wider range of movement Your hips and shoulders can swing in almost any direction

11 Hinge Joints Move like hinges on a door
Elbows, knees, and fingers also have these types of joints.

12 Gliding Joints Your spinal cord is made of bundles of nerves that carry impulses from all parts of the body to the brain and from the brain to all parts of your body. The spinal cord is about as big around as an adult thumb The joints between vertebrae are called gliding joints where one part of a bone slides over another bone.

13 Immovable Joints Bones of the skull and pelvis
Allow little or no movement

14 The Big Picture Skull Shoulder Blade Ribs Backbone (vertebrae)
Arm Bones Hip Bone (Pelvis) Finger Bones Thigh Bone Leg Bones Knee Bone (patella) Foot Bones
